Baby Boomer dates are unusually consistent. Later generations vary by source, so this guide compares Pew ranges, competing boundaries and why the labels keep moving.
Ask which generation someone born in 1996 belongs to and you will get two confident answers. Millennial, says one source. Gen Z, says another. Both cite a chart.
The disagreement is not sloppiness. Only one generation in common use has a defensible, data-derived boundary. Every other line on the chart was drawn by someone who needed a line.
The one generation with a real definition
The Baby Boom is a measured demographic event. US birth rates jumped sharply after the Second World War, stayed elevated for years, and then fell, and the US Census Bureau identified the boom as running from 1946 to 1964 because that is where the data turns.
That gives Boomers something no later generation has: a start and an end you can point to on a chart of birth counts. The boundaries are not an interpretation of culture. They are where a curve rises and falls.
Everything after that is inference. There was no comparable demographic event marking the start of Gen X, the end of the Millennials, or the beginning of Gen Z. Those lines were placed by researchers, marketers and journalists reasoning about which formative experiences a cohort shared, which is a legitimate exercise, but a fundamentally different kind of claim.
How far the sources actually diverge
Pew Research Center’s ranges became the most-cited set because Pew published them, used them consistently in survey work, and explained its reasoning. But Pew is one voice among several, and popular usage has drifted from it.

The Millennial row is where the disagreement is most consequential, because it is the largest cohort in most Western countries and the most heavily marketed to. Pew ends it at 1996. A great deal of media usage runs it to 1999 or 2000, largely because “born in the 1980s and 1990s” is easier to say than a 1996 cut-off.
Pew’s reasoning for 1996 is specific: someone born in 1996 was too young to have any memory of the September 11 attacks as they happened, and reached adulthood after the 2008 financial crisis. Those two events anchor the Millennial experience in Pew’s framing, and a 1997 birth year misses both. It is a defensible argument. It is also an argument, not a measurement, and someone who weighted different events would draw the line elsewhere.

Then Pew stopped
In May 2023, Pew Research Center published a piece explaining that it would be much more sparing in its use of generational labels, and would not coin new ones. The reasoning is worth understanding, because it comes from the organisation that made these labels standard research vocabulary.
Their case, in short:
Twenty-year spans are too wide to mean anything. Someone born in 1981 and someone born in 1996 are both Millennials, and they came of age in noticeably different worlds, one before mainstream social media, one after. Reporting them as a single unit averages away the variation it claims to describe.
Generational differences are frequently confounded with age. If under-thirties report different attitudes than over-sixties, that could be a cohort effect, a lasting mark of when they grew up, or a lifecycle effect that every generation shows at that age. Distinguishing the two requires comparing people at the same age across different decades, which needs historical data most surveys do not have.
The labels invite lazy generalisation. “Gen Z is anxious” is a claim about tens of millions of people spanning fifteen birth years, most of it built from differences small enough to be swamped by education, income and geography.
Pew still studies age. They stopped treating birth-year brackets as an explanatory variable in their own right unless the data supports it.
Cohort effect or lifecycle effect?
This is the distinction that separates a real generational finding from a statistical artefact, and it is worth being able to apply.
A cohort effect persists as the group ages. If a generation entered the workforce during a severe recession, the resulting wage penalty and risk aversion can be measurable decades later, because the imprint was made at a formative moment.
A lifecycle effect is a property of being that age. Young adults have always moved house more, saved less, held less conservative political views and reported more openness to change. When each cohort reaches middle age, those patterns shift in broadly similar ways.
The test is simple to state: compare people at the same age in different decades. If thirty-year-olds today differ from thirty-year-olds in 1990, that is a cohort effect. If today’s thirty-year-olds simply resemble every previous cohort’s thirty-year-olds, the label is doing no work.
Most viral generational claims fail this test, because it is much easier to survey different ages once than the same age repeatedly across thirty years.
Where generational labels are genuinely useful
- Describing shared formative technology, what existed when you were fifteen
- Anchoring economic conditions at labour-market entry, which leave lasting marks
- Grouping cohorts by the policy environment they were schooled under
- Quick shorthand in conversation, where precision is not the point
- Historical framing where the cohort really did share a discrete event
Where they mislead
- Any claim about personality or work ethic across a fifteen-year span
- Comparisons that confuse being young with belonging to a cohort
- Cross-country generalisation, the labels are largely US-derived
- Hiring and management decisions about individuals
- Anywhere education, income or geography explains more of the variance
The geography point deserves emphasis. These labels come from US demographic history. A 1960s childhood in South Korea, Nigeria, Poland or Brazil had almost nothing in common with a 1960s childhood in Ohio, and calling all four “Baby Boomers” imports an American timeline wholesale. Several countries have their own cohort vocabulary that fits their own history far better, and where they do, that vocabulary is the more useful one.
Microgenerations: the cusp problem, named
Because the boundaries are arbitrary and people born near them recognise that neither label fits, informal microgenerations have emerged to describe the overlap.

None are research categories. All three are self-descriptions that spread because they capture something the official labels miss.
The Xennial claim is the sharpest: an analogue childhood and a digital adulthood. That cohort learned to use a library card catalogue and later learned to use a smartphone, and the transition happened while they were young enough to absorb both and old enough to remember the switch. Neither Gen X nor Millennial conveys that.
That microgenerations exist at all is the strongest available evidence that the main boundaries are conventions rather than discoveries. If the lines marked real discontinuities, nobody would need a word for standing on one.
Where the names came from
The naming history is more haphazard than the tidy alphabetical sequence suggests.
The Greatest Generation was popularised by Tom Brokaw’s 1998 book of that name, decades after the cohort it describes had lived its formative years.
The Silent Generation comes from a 1951 Time magazine article characterising the young adults of the day as cautious and unwilling to make noise, a description that has aged into a label its subjects never chose.
Baby Boomers is the descriptive term for the measured birth-rate spike, and the only name derived from the phenomenon itself.
Generation X was taken from Douglas Coupland’s 1991 novel Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. The X carried a deliberate sense of undefined, unlabelled, resistant to categorisation, which is somewhat ironic given what happened next.
Millennials was coined by Neil Howe and William Strauss, who had previously used “13th Generation” for Gen X. The name marks the cohort coming of age around the year 2000. “Generation Y” circulated first, as a straightforward continuation of X, and was largely displaced.
Generation Z simply continued the alphabet after Y. There is no meaning in the letter at all, which is how the sequence ran out and forced a restart with Alpha and then Beta, borrowed from the Greek alphabet by the Australian demographer Mark McCrindle.
So of eight commonly used labels, one is derived from demographic data, two come from books, one from a magazine article, and the rest are alphabetical placeholders. The framework people treat as demographic science is largely a sequence of publishing accidents.
What to do with a generation label
Use it as a rough index of when, not a claim about who.
Knowing someone is Gen X tells you approximately what technology existed during their adolescence and what the labour market looked like when they entered it. That is genuinely informative context. It tells you nothing about their attitudes, competence or preferences, and treating it as though it does is where the whole framework goes wrong.
If you are near a boundary, the honest answer is that you are near a boundary.
